Wildlife Habitats

A survey of natural habitats Galway City identified fifty eight different wildlife habitats within the city boundaries, which is a huge range when compared with other urban areas of comparable size. Twenty two of the habitats identified are considered to be nationally or internationally rare and are of high ecological or natural heritage value. This rich natural heritage is an invaluable asset for the city.

Galway City even contains a few areas designated for nature conservation based on their international and national importance, as well as several proposed Natural Heritage Areas (listed in the Galway City Development Plan weblink).
